16 April 2015

LEADING Australian jockey Chad Schofield, who won the Cox Plate on Shamus Award in 2013, is heading to Britain for a three month spell this summer when he will ride for Ed Dunlop, writes James Burn.

Schofield, who has also ridden top sprinter Lankan Rupee, will arrive in Newmarket towards the end of this month. The idea came from owner Terry Henderson and it is something the rider is relishing.“Terry actually mentioned it tome 12 months ago,” Schofield said. “He said if I was ever keen to head over there he’d highly recommend it, so I took him upon the offer and he couldn't have been more helpful.

“He contacted a few trainers on my behalf and Ed Dunlop showed a lot of interest and was keen to have me, so I'm going to Newmarket to ride for him.“With the carnival in Sydney over I feel the time is right for me to head over there for three months and then come back for the new season.”

On racing.com, Schofield, 21,added: “I've never ridden over seas so I'm just looking forward to going and gaining experience and learning some more riding styles and riding on different tracks for different trainers.”

Dunlop said: “We are delighted Chad will be based with us. He is already a high-class pilot having secured Cox Plate and Newmarket Handicap victories and hopefully we can provide him plenty of ammunition for his summer spell here.“He will, of course, be looking to secure plenty of rides for other connections and, with Tony Hind acting as his agent, we hope he can enjoy a fruitful time here.”

James McDonald, Godolphin’s main rider in Australia, will also be riding in Britain this summer.
