GRADE 1-winning trainer Mike Mitchell, who sent out a host of winners in California, has died at the age of 65,writes James Burn.

Mitchell, who started training in 1974 and saddled more than 2,500 winners, underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2012 and retired last year, passing the reins to his long time assistant Phil D’Amato.

Mitchell’s wife Denise posted on Facebook: “Mike went home to be with the Lord. We are overwhelmed by the prayers and love that has been sent our way. He fought the good fight and has finished the race and most importantly has kept the faith.”

The winning most trainer at Del Mar,Mitchell won seven trainers’ titles at Hollywood Park and two at Santa Anita – tracks at which only the legendary Bobby Frankel had more winners.Mitchell’s notable top-level wins include Monzante’s Eddie Read Handicap success in 2008 and Egg Drop’s Matriarch Stakes victory in 2013, the trainer’s last Grade 1.
