Drake kicks off new career at Catterick

27 January 2016

SAM DRAKE saddles her first runner today when Star Presenter lines up for the 1m7½f handicap chase at Catterick.

Drake, 28, has taken over the training of horses previously under the care of her father Richard, and has ten to campaign at her yard in Guiseley, West Yorkshire.

Commenting on the chances of Star Presenter getting her off to a winning start, Drake said:“He’s well but is up in the weights and in a tougher grade. He won nicely last time, though, so we thought it was worth taking our chance.”

Drake will already be known to many racing fans, particularly those in the north, as she rode 31 winners under rules, enjoying a particularly good season in 2012-13 when she registered 15 victories.

She struck up an excellent partnership with the strong stayer Leac An Scail, winning twice and finishing placed onseven other occasions, and partnered him in the cross country chase at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival.

Asked about her initial ambitions in her new role, Drake replied: “We just want to keep the horses fit, happy and healthy and we’ll hopefully have a few winners.”
