Fildes new Haydock general manager

22 December 2014

Jason Fildes has been appointed general manager at Haydock Park and will take up his duties on January 5.

Fildes, 52, who has been a racecourse committee director at Haydock since last year, founded the Barden Mill Company in Lancashire in 1993 as a textiles company, and as managing director built it into a retail venue with turnover of £3.5 million and more than £300,000 annually.

A keen racing enthusiast, he has had horses in training with Alan King, William Haggas and William Kinsey.

In succeeding Garry Fortune who was recently appointed Head of Jockey Club Venues, Fildes in his new role will report to John Baker, who is responsible for the running of Aintree, Carlisle and Haydock Park as North West Regional Director for Jockey Club Racecourses.

Baker said: "Jason has already displayed his energetic, enthusiastic and charismatic approach as a director of the racecourse committee. I am looking forward to working with him on the many ideas he has to make a difference at Haydock Park on the back of his great track record in business in the north west."

Haydock chairman Lord Daresbury said: "I am delighted that Jason will make the switch from the racecourse committee to become general manager at Haydock Park. He has a thorough knowledge and passion for racing and is very well connected in the north west business community. I think he will make a fantastic contribution to the future of Haydock Park."

Fildes commented: "I am passionate about the success of Haydock Park, its status in the local community and in British racing. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the racecourse committee and that experience will give me a head start as general manager.

"My involvement with the course goes right back to my student days as a young racegoer. I have very fond memories of seeing Forgive 'N Forget winning the Tommy Whittle Chase almost 30 years ago, which we stage here again on Saturday.

"I am looking forward to working with the excellent team in place here at Haydock and with John Baker who does a superb job as Regional Director. I believe the attention to detail required in running a retail business, combined with the day-to-day involvement with staff and customers, will be useful in my new role."
