Lang to quit SIS for

05 November 2013

BETTING industry heavyweight Richard Lang is set to join Ladbrokes in the next few weeks as the company’s commercial director, UK retail. The announcement comes a little over three months after he joined SIS.

Lang was at Coral for 25 years before leaving his position as chief operating officer in a management restructure at the end of January. It was then announced at the end of July that he would be joining SIS as managing director of commerce and operations.

He will report to Ladbrokes group commercial director John Pettit.
Nick Rust, Ladbrokes managing director, retail, said of Lang’s appointment: “Richard has extensive experience in retail bookmaking and will be a significant asset to Ladbrokes as we continue to improve our offer in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”

During his time at Coral Lang had a number of roles, including operations director and head of retail as well as chief operating officer.

He also represented Coral on the bookmakers’ committee, the council of the Association of British Bookmakers and was chairman of the organisation behind the betting shop numbers game 49s.

Lang said he had enjoyed his time at SIS but could not turn down the Ladbrokes job.

He said: “It’s a good offer and retail bookmaking is in my blood – it’s my background. The role I’ve been offered I believe plays to my strengths in terms of looking at the product and the content and how we can better deliver for Ladbrokes and the future.

“I felt it was a very difficult decision to make but I felt it was the right move for me to make, bearing in mind what I believe I can bring to the table.”

Lang, 50, said he had loved his time at SIS, adding: “I thoroughly enjoyed myself. They are challenging times clearly in this sector with ever more competition and pressures on retail bookmakers with pricing and the like.

“There are some very good people here – there are some challenges for the business but some big opportunities as well which is why I landed here in the first place.”

Lang is the latest high- profile departure at SIS following the likes of Phil Siers and more recently Brent Dolan and Paul Ritchie who all joined Betfred.

In what has been a turbulent year for SIS, the company recently announced it was withdrawing from the outside broadcast market following a strategic review prompted by the loss of its contract with BBC Sport.
