Merriam joins BHA as independent director

17 August 2012

JOCKEY CLUB ESTATES chairman Andrew Merriam has been appointed to succeed John Bridgeman as one of two independent regulatory directors on the BHA board.

Owner-breeder Merriam is the current chairman of the BHA's stewarding and disciplinary policy committee. He also sits on the board of Fakenham racecourse, is a steward at the Jockey Club, and is a trustee of the British Racing School in Newmarket.

He replaces John Bridgeman, who had sat as an independent regulatory director since the BHA's inception in 2007 and retired from the role in July.

BHA chairman Paul Roy said: "Andrew has had a long and distinguished involvement in many aspects of horse racing. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the sport and its regulation and I have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution to the BHA and its board."

Merriam said: "I am delighted to have been appointed a director and I am looking forward to working alongside the other members of the board. Having been closely involved with the sport throughout my life I am well aware of the many challenges facing british racing but I am also encouraged by the progress BHA and its stakeholders are making in addressing them.

"It is my aim to contribute as best I can to helping the board achieve its objectives for the betterment of the sport."
