Newton Abbot Racecourse Announces New Chairman

05 June 2013

Newton Abbot Racecourse, the leading summer jumping racecourse in the UK, has appointed Hugh Michelmore as its new chairman.

Hugh, a local businessman and senior partner of Plymouth law firm, Gill Akaster LLP Solicitors, has been a valued director of Newton Abbot Racecourse for more than 25 years. Involvement with the course has become a family tradition for Hugh as his father was also a director, and his grandfather was not only chairman but co-founded the company in 1926.

Hugh replaces Aubrey Loze who held the post for 10 years and was much revered in racing circles.

Speaking of his new role, Hugh commented: “I am thrilled to take up this much coveted post and thank Aubrey for his ten years of work before me.

“Newton Abbot is a successful course with an enthusiastic and passionate team, ensuring we offer the very best standard of racing. My role will be to ensure we continue to improve both the quality of our facilities and the overall racing experience for our thousands of visitors each season.”

Pat Masterson, managing director of Newton Abbot Racecourse, commented: “Aubrey was a fantastic chairman and we fully appreciate his longstanding support. Hugh has shown great dedication over the last two decades and we are delighted to welcome him to the post.”

Hugh Michelmore is the senior partner of Gill Akaster LLP Solicitors, a Plymouth firm which employs 65 members of staff across seven specialist departments: commercial; residential conveyancing; employment; dispute resolution; personal injury; family and wills, trusts and taxes. He is also chairman of Peninsula Finance PLC and a director and shareholder in Radio Plymouth Ltd.
